News in brief

Lori's Hands App
We are thrilled to report that this Fall semester marks the launch of our Lori's Hands app! The app will allow us to do a much better job of tracking client visits and volunteer hours as well as keeping tabs on what our volunteers do on visits. We will never be able to quantify all the work that our volunteers put in, but it will be great to be able to keep track of the time our students spend in the community! Special thanks to Catchafire for hooking us up with the best app developer we could ever hope to work with, Travis Ma. The app will be ready for students to use this semester.

Sunny Day Fund
We are always looking for new ways to carry out our mission of improving quality of life for individuals and families affected by chronic illness. Thanks to our incredible network of student volunteers, we're able to go a long way towards fulfilling that mission for no money at all. Every now and then, though, we find ourselves wanting to give back to our amazing clients, and thanks to our supporters, we have the financial resources to make it happen!

We are now formally announcing the launch of the Lori's Hands Sunny Day Fund, which will allow us to go the extra mile to brighten clients' days. Students will apply for Sunny Day funding only after thoroughly researching other community resources that could be used by their clients. Sunny Day funding could be used for a day of professional yard work, a trip to a baseball game, an upgraded assistive device or anything else that makes life a little better for the clients who teach our students so much. We'll keep you posted on how you can contribute to the Sunny Day Fund in the coming months.

Shopping for fresh groceries is one of the best and easiest ways volunteers can help promote their clients' health and quality of life.
A sneak peak of the LH app: coming soon!
A special client-volunteer lunch is one way Sunny Day funding could be used.
The new Lori's Hands training video is now complete!

Meet Kara, our first official LH employee!

We have been thrilled for the past several weeks to welcome Kara Kattau to the team. Here's a note from Kara:

"Prior to becoming a fulltime Masters in Public Administration student and Graduate Assistant for Lori's Hands I was the Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity in Atlantic County, NJ.  Prior to Habitat in Atlantic County, I was a marketing assistant for Habitat for Humanity in Sussex County, DE.  I hold an MBA from Johns Hopkins University and was in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry before my switch into nonprofit as I found it to be much more fulfilling.  I am very excited to be able to work with Lori's Hands and assist you with your mission.

On a personal note I am from Long Island, NY, I currently live in Newark, DE with my boyfriend (returned Peace Corps volunteer) and our rescue dog Chauncey. Outside of school I'm involved with animal rescue and working on changing animal policy in Delaware."

Kara has been working on organizing group volunteer days, interviewing potential clients and reaching out to potential corporate partners. We would never have been able to bring Kara on board without all of your support, so THANK YOU!
New Yorkers: join us for a bar night fundraiser Saturday, December 5th at Pioneers in Chelsea! There is no cover charge, so just show up around 8:30, bring your friends, have some drinks (LH will get half the profits) and sing karaoke. See you there!
A call for board members and volunteers

We at Lori's Hands have so many wonderful supporters and want to officially begin recognizing the efforts of our volunteers who are neither students nor board members. We are also in the process of formalizing our board. It's great to have so much young energy on our team, but we have reached the point where we think it would be valuable to have oversight from some experienced professionals. If you are interested in serving on our board, and particularly if you have skills that might be valuable to us, please fill out this form and feel free to share it with others who might be interested.
We are so excited to announce that our second annual Lori's Hands Picnic will be held April 2, 2016, at the Hilton Christiana. Last year we had an incredible turnout (and an absolute blast). We're moving the date just a little later in the season this year so we can move the party out to the patio if the weather's nice! If you know of any business that might be interested in sponsoring the event, please let us know. We hope to see you all there!
